Wonton – Little Parcels of Goodness

nyonya, recipe, easy, Chinese, Straits born

Wonton is a favourite Chinese food, well-known all over the world.

Wonton comes in various types of fillings. It is usually pork, and sometimes prawns. The version that I am making is pork wonton, with a bit of prawns for the crunch.

I can recall my childhood days in the little hometown called Kepala Batas, in Province Wellesley (as it was then known). There was only one stall selling wonton noodles. In fact it was practically the only stall that sells food for that matter! We loved the wontons. It was very different from the wonton noodles that we know – Hong Kong style and all. It was simple and very little filling ( not much for a 30 cent bowl!).

The recipe below is my own version. I fold the wonton instead of scrunching. When I make the wonton, I deep fry some and I also serve them in soup. When you have two young kids who like different things, that is what a mum has to do.

I make wonton noodle to go with the wontons. Or rather, I cook the noodles, not make them.

Here is the recipe for the wonton. I will add the recipe for the wonton noodles in another post.

Enjoy!

Wonton

200 mince pork

3 large or 50g peeled prawns – cut into small cubes

½ tsp corn flour

½ tsp sesame oil

2 tsp soy sauce

¼ tsp salt

¼ tsp white pepper powder

3 sprigs coriander leaves (chopped)

1 packet wonton skin

1 tsp corn flour mixed with some water

(Note: the amount of seasoning you use is up to your taste. It is just a suggestion)

Method

  1. Combine all the ingredients and mix thoroughly
  2. Put about 1 tsp of the mixture in a wonton skin.
  3. Wet edge with the corn flour paste. Wrap up or scrunched to seal.

You can serve the wonton in 2 ways

A. Boiled wonton – for soup

  1. Boil a pot of water. Put in wanton. When it floats, dish out and add to prepared soup.

B  Fried wonton

  1. Fry wonton in hot oil until light brown. Drain and serve with chilli sauce.
