Dinner @ The Royal Arms

Large Blog ImageWe recently had a dinner here. This was  to celebrate a birthday.

This restaurant is our favourite. We have been patronising this restaurant on a regular basis for many years. We used to dine here about once every fortnight or monthly. However, as we have discovered many more restaurants around where we live, we are not patronising it as much as we used too. However, whenever we want a good meal with consistent quality, we will always come back to this place.

The Royal Arms is a 4 star restaurant ( it says in its website).  The decor is rustic and it reflects the ambience of the hotel. We always like the service here. It is always quick and attentive.

On this occasion, we went there to celebrate a birthday. We made our bookings several days earlier. When we arrived, we were shown to our table as soon as we went in.

With the usual drinks order, we selected our courses. We were served complementary snacks of bread and nibbles. Well, when we get that at restaurant, we know that it is going to take a while before we get our food. The restaurant was busy but not full. There were some events going one in the conference/meeting area. There are usually weddings or some other functions going on. However, the wait for the food was not too long.

My girls decided to entertain themselves and got a bit creative.

For Starters, daughter No 2 had Prawn with Marie Rose sauce.

AKA Prawn Cocktail. Prawns are one of my favourite sea food. The prawn cocktail was served in a lettuce cup with some toasts and Marie Rose sauce. This is a classic dish since the 70’s, I believe.  It is still served in many restaurants. The prawns and the sauce go well with a squirt of lemon juice. A very satisfying, comforting and reliable taste

Hubby had the Tomato and Red Pepper Soup.

It looks lovely and warm and was well presented with some bread. “The soup is very nice”, was the remark, with the emphasis on ‘very nice’.

Daughter No 1 had Chicken Skewers. It was served with Onion Bhaji, Mango Chutney and some salad. The skewers were spicy and the Mango Chutney was lovely.

I had Chicken Wings with Honey for my starter.

The wings were lightly marinated and fried and then coated in a Honey sauce. The wings were succulent and with a slightly sweet tinge. The flavours blend in well.

For the mains, daughter No 2 had good old Fish and Chips.

The chips were well done. and the fish was moist.

Daughter No 1 had the Pork Belly.

It came on a bed of vegetables and mash as well.

I had pan-fried Sea Bass, served on a bed of vegetables.

The fillets were lightly pan-fried without being greasy. The fish was fresh – according to my Chinese standard. The fresh vegetables go well with the fish. It was actually quite a big portion, although it looked deceptively small.

Hubby had the pie. It was the good old Ham, Chicken and Leek Pie served with the usual sides of chips, peas and gravy. It was a no fault dish and he enjoyed it very much.

We did not order dessert except for daughter No 2 who ordered Chocolate Fudge Caked that was served with ice cream. We were all very full.

It was a good meal and we went home happy.

Verdict:

With drinks, 4 starter, 4 mains and a dessert,  the bill came up to around £120.

This is a restaurant with consistent quality. We know we will get good value for money.
